Since
1986, Sojourn Nepal has been based in Kathmandu, Nepal,
creating trips in the Himalayan region designed to
place students in a safe yet challenging setting away
from the center of their known world. We have expanded
and developed our offering of programs to include
summer programs, adult programs, programs designed
specifically for prep schools, and programs that focus
on medicinal plants and healing, film or photography.
In order to reflect Sojourn's broadening scope in
experiential education programs in Asia, we have changed
our name to Sojourn Asia.
Sojourn's directors and coordinators are Nepalis,
Tibetans, Mongolians, Indians and Americans living
in their respective regions of Asia, which makes our
collective knowledge and experience in this region
vast.
Over 350 Sojourners have participated in Sojourn programs
since its inception in 1986.
Our programs are created for students taking a break
from busy lives in their home countries who have a
sincere desire to experience and learn from a foreign
culture. It is vital that students come to Asia sensitive
to others' beliefs and with a willingness to temporarily
live by Asian ways. Our guiding credo is "comprehension
of the self through detour of the other". The
most important luggage a Sojourn student can bring
is an open heart, one that is open to learning from
new experiences. We believe there is an enormous amount
that one can learn by immersing oneself in an unfamiliar
culture. Our commitment to experiential education
has helped many students reassess their goals and
values and allowed them to return to a formal educational
setting with renewed interest and energy.
Many
of the activities that take place during the program
will call for the entire group to be together. During
these times a strong emphasis is placed on group process.
As a balance to this, students are given a great deal
of unstructured time. We believe that the best way
for us to help students to come to know the region
is by providing opportunities for direct contact and
close interaction with the people while allowing participants
the freedom to pursue their personal interests.
